Global Day for Mine Awareness to be Observed Today

Islamabad: Pakistan, along with the rest of the world, will observe the Global Day for Mine Awareness today, April 4th, Friday.

On this occasion, various governmental and non-governmental organizations will hold walks, exhibitions of photographs and documentaries, academic discussions, and press conferences.

These events will highlight the dangers posed to human lives by the millions of landmines laid in conflict zones and emphasize the precautions that must be taken to prevent further casualties.

The United Nations established this global day in 2006 with the aim of raising awareness about landmines, the deadliest weapon in terms of civilian casualties, and calling for a ban on their use worldwide.

Landmines are unique in that they not only claim lives during wartime but continue to cause death and injury long after a conflict has ended, making them a persistent threat in peaceful times as well.

The global community must intensify efforts to ensure the safe removal of these mines and prevent further tragedies.
