French President Emmanuel Macron has indicated that France may recognize the State of Palestine in the coming months.
In an interview with France 5 television, Macron stated, “I want to finalize this decision in June at a United Nations conference on the Israel-Palestine conflict, which will be co-hosted by France and Saudi Arabia.”
He added, “We must move toward recognition, and we will do so in the coming months. I am not doing this to please anyone; I will take this step when I believe the time is right.”
Statement by Palestine’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs
Meanwhile, Palestine’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Warssin Aghabekian Shahin, told AFP that “Recognition by France would be a correct step in line with the rights of the Palestinian people and the protection of the two-state solution.”
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar’s Tweet
On the other hand, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar tweeted on X that “Any unilateral recognition of such an imaginary Palestinian state by any country would, in light of current ground realities, be a reward for terrorism and an encouragement to Hamas.”
It is worth noting that 147 out of 193 United Nations member states have already recognized Palestine as a sovereign state.
Last year, Armenia, Slovenia, Ireland, Norway, Spain, the Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, and Barbados also joined the list of countries recognizing Palestine.
However, despite growing international support, major Western powers such as the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Germany have yet to recognize the Palestinian state.
