Google has officially unveiled its highly anticipated Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro smartphones, marking a bold new chapter in the company’s mobile device lineup. Showcased at a virtual launch event, the new Pixel phones introduce a fresh design, upgraded cameras, and Google’s first-ever custom-built processor, the Google Tensor chip.
The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are positioned to directly challenge Apple’s iPhone 13 series and Samsung’s Galaxy lineup, offering flagship-level features at competitive prices. With a focus on AI-powered performance and photography, the new Pixels aim to redefine the Android smartphone experience.
At the core of the Pixel 6 series is the Google Tensor SoC (System on Chip) — a processor designed in-house to enhance machine learning and artificial intelligence capabilities. Google claims Tensor delivers faster performance, improved battery efficiency, and smarter features like real-time translation, advanced voice typing, and enhanced photo processing.
The Pixel 6 Pro boasts a 6.7-inch QHD+ LTPO OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, while the standard Pixel 6 features a 6.4-inch FHD+ display with a 90Hz refresh rate. Both models are protected by Gorilla Glass Victus and have IP68 water and dust resistance ratings.
Photography is a major highlight of the Pixel 6 series. The Pixel 6 features a dual-camera system, while the Pixel 6 Pro adds a telephoto lens with 4x optical zoom. New camera features include Magic Eraser to remove unwanted elements from photos, Motion Mode for action shots, and Real Tone, which improves skin tone accuracy for people of color — addressing long-standing biases in smartphone photography.
The phones launch with Android 12, which introduces Google’s new Material You design language. This brings a more personalized, fluid interface with dynamic theming that matches the user’s wallpaper colors across the system.
Google also emphasized its commitment to privacy and security, with the Pixel 6 featuring the new Titan M2 security chip and offering up to five years of security updates.
The Pixel 6 is priced starting at $599, while the Pixel 6 Pro starts at $899. Both models are now available for pre-order and will ship to customers starting next week.
