Lahore: The 10-nation Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) has designated Lahore as the “ECO Tourism Capital” for the year 2027, which is a major global honor for Pakistan and especially the province of Punjab.
It should be noted that the green city of Uzbekistan (Shahrisabz) has previously received this honor, while the city of Erzurum in the Eastern Anatolia Region of Turkey has been selected as the “ECO Tourism Capital” for 2025.
ECO includes Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Each year, the organization selects one city from its member countries for this unique honor, which aims to promote the region’s cultural heritage and tourism.
Lahore is being given this honor due to its rich historical significance, cultural grandeur and tourist attraction.
This is the city also known as the City of Gardens, where the great monuments of the Mughal era, colorful bazaars, lively people and diverse culture are exemplary.
In 2019, ECO decided at its ministerial conference that the organization would designate one city as the Tourism Capital every year to promote tourism in its member countries, and now Lahore receiving this honor is a major achievement for Pakistani culture and heritage on the global stage.
