Lahore: Pakistan has decided to give notice to India over the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.
According to sources, legal and constitutional consultations are urgently underway in response to India’s move to suspend the treaty. The preliminary groundwork has already been completed by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Water Resources, and Law.
Sources in the Indus Commission revealed that Pakistan will demand a solid explanation from India for its unilateral suspension of the treaty. The notice will be formally delivered through diplomatic channels in the coming days.
Pakistan is also considering raising strong objections at international forums to expose India’s water aggression and present its violations to the global community. Sources added that Pakistan holds legal precedence under the Indus Waters Treaty and expects that India will be compelled to review its decision. All actions will be carried out following approval from the government and federal cabinet.
India-Pakistan Tensions
It is important to note that tensions escalated following a tragic incident on April 22, when a shooting in the Pahalgam tourist area of Indian-occupied Kashmir resulted in 26 deaths and nearly a dozen injuries. India, without presenting any evidence, blamed Pakistan and subsequently suspended the Indus Waters Treaty unilaterally.
In response, Pakistan not only condemned the Pahalgam attack but also offered full cooperation for an impartial investigation. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that Pakistan is ready to assist in any fair inquiry into the incident.
India, meanwhile, has issued aggressive threats against Pakistan. However, Pakistan’s political and military leadership has made it clear that any Indian misadventure will be met with a strong and unforgettable response.
