Lahore: Pakistan Awami Tehreek Secretary General Khurram Nawaz Gandapur has strongly condemned the incident of a Muslim woman pulling her hijab in Bihar, India, calling it a direct attack on human rights, women’s dignity and religious freedom.
He said that such unfortunate incidents are not only a negation of democratic values but also a dangerous example of targeting a specific class. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s interference in a woman’s religious dress or private areas is a completely immoral and condemnable act.
Hijab is the personal and religious right of every woman, which every state and every government must respect.
He said that those in power are expected to be the protectors of the law and the constitution and not to humiliate citizens. Khurram Nawaz Gandapur called the incident a violation of international human rights treaties as well as principles related to religious freedom and protection of women.

He said that such incidents promote intolerance, prejudice and hatred. Khurram Nawaz Gandapur said that the law should be equal for all and no position or office should be used as a justification for violating human rights. The Secretary General of Pakistan Awami Tehreek further said that the niqab or hijab is part of the religious identity and personal freedom of any Muslim woman, and forcibly removing it is considered an attack on a woman’s autonomy.

He stressed that such incidents promote hatred, intolerance and prejudice in societies, which should be discouraged at all levels. Khurram Nawaz Gandapur said that those who talk about protecting human rights at the global level should seriously consider such incidents so that the principles of religious freedom, respect for women and human dignity can be ensured in practice.
