Asim Munir to Visit Tehran Monday as Pakistan Pushes for Regional Peace

TEHRAN: Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces and Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, will visit Tehran on Monday as Islamabad continues diplomatic efforts aimed at strengthening regional peace and security, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Sunday.

Baghaei said Munir’s visit is intended to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and Iran and continue Pakistan’s efforts to promote peace and security in the region. He added that Munir will hold discussions with senior Iranian officials during the visit.

The visit comes at a sensitive time for the region, with tensions between Iran and the United States remaining high and Washington preparing additional sanctions against Tehran. Reuters reported that the talks between Iran and the US have stalled, while Pakistan has taken on a mediation role in efforts to revive dialogue.

Why Is Asim Munir Visiting Tehran Now?

The timing of the visit gives it significance beyond routine Pakistan-Iran bilateral relations. Islamabad has been involved in efforts to facilitate dialogue between Iran and the United States, while regional tensions continue to affect security, diplomacy and energy supplies.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office has previously said Islamabad is making efforts to bring the parties involved in the regional crisis back to the negotiating table and that the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding has provided a framework for peace and stability efforts.

Munir’s visit therefore comes as Pakistan continues to use diplomatic and direct channels to support regional de-escalation.

What Will Munir Discuss With Iranian Leaders?

Iran has not publicly provided a detailed agenda for all of Munir’s meetings. However, a Pakistani government source cited by Reuters said discussions are expected to cover regional peace efforts under the Islamabad MoU, US President Donald Trump’s warning of tougher sanctions against Iran, developments following the Pakistan-Turkey-Saudi Arabia agreement and Houthi-related issues.

The visit also follows a telephone conversation between Munir and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Iran said the two discussed regional developments and ways to strengthen peace, stability and security in West Asia.

The immediate outcome of the Tehran meetings remains unknown because the visit has yet to take place.

Why Does the Visit Matter for Pakistan and Iran?

For Pakistan, maintaining communication with Tehran is important because developments involving Iran have direct implications for regional security and Pakistan’s own neighbourhood.

For Iran, continued engagement with Pakistan provides a channel with a neighbouring country that has maintained communication with both Tehran and Washington during the wider regional crisis.

The visit also follows earlier high-level engagement between Pakistan and Iran. In May, Munir visited Iran and met President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni as part of efforts aimed at de-escalation and regional stability.

What Happens Next?

Munir’s meetings with Iranian officials will provide a clearer indication of the direction of Pakistan’s latest diplomatic efforts.

The key questions will be whether Islamabad can help sustain communication between the parties, whether Iran and the United States can return to meaningful negotiations, and whether Pakistan’s engagement can contribute to reducing wider regional tensions.

For now, the confirmed purpose of the visit is to strengthen Pakistan-Iran cooperation and support regional peace and security. Any broader diplomatic outcome will depend on the discussions in Tehran and subsequent developments.
