Maryland: Actress Kaylee Hottle, best known for portraying Jia in the Godzilla film franchise, has died following a single-vehicle car crash in the US state of Maryland. She was 18. Her family confirmed her death, while authorities said the crash remains under investigation.
Hottle’s father, Joshua Hottle, announced the heartbreaking news during a live broadcast in American Sign Language (ASL), describing the loss of his daughter in an emotional tribute. The announcement was later followed by messages of condolence from across the entertainment industry and the deaf community.
According to the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, Hottle was one of two passengers in a car that veered off the road and struck a culvert in Ijamsville, Maryland, early Tuesday morning. She was airlifted to a trauma centre but died before reaching the hospital. Authorities said the driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries, another passenger declined medical treatment, and excessive speed is believed to have been a contributing factor. The investigation is ongoing.

The Texas School for the Deaf, where Hottle was a senior student, paid tribute to the young actress, describing her death as a heartbreaking loss for the school community. Support services were also offered to students and staff following the announcement.
Born into a multigenerational deaf family, Hottle became a widely admired figure for promoting authentic deaf representation in mainstream entertainment. A native ASL user, she inspired countless young people through both her acting career and her advocacy for greater inclusion in Hollywood.
Her breakout role as Jia in Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024) earned widespread recognition. Her performance was praised for bringing authenticity to the MonsterVerse films, while her on-screen relationship with Kong became one of the franchise’s emotional highlights.
In addition to the Godzilla films, Hottle appeared in an episode of Magnum P.I. and participated in campaigns promoting accessibility and awareness within the deaf community. She had also been cast in an upcoming film, What Doesn’t Kill Us, making her death a significant loss for both Hollywood and advocates of deaf representation.
