Why Do Today’s Youth View Disobedience to Parents as a Minor Issue?

By: Ch Shoukat Abrar

In a time dominated by digital stimulation, individualism, and rapid cultural shifts, one of the most painful changes we see is the decreasing respect for parents. For many young people today, disobedience—once considered a serious moral fault—has gradually become a minor matter. Yet, in the Qur’an, Allah Almighty didn’t just advise kindness to parents; He defined even the smallest annoyance, like saying “Uff,” as forbidden. Why, then, has such a strict divine command been overlooked by so many?

This disconnect results from multiple layers of changing values—social, psychological, and spiritual. Understanding these factors is crucial if we want to restore the sacredness of the parent–child relationship.

The Culture of Individualism

Modern society exalts independence to an extreme. Young people are taught to “live for themselves,” “set their own rules,” and reject authority that limits their personal freedom. While independence can be positive, it becomes harmful when it fosters disrespect toward those who raised and nurtured them.

Parents’ guidance, once cherished, is now often misunderstood as interference.

Technology: A Barrier to Human Connection

Screens have replaced conversations. Social media influences thinking much more than the wisdom of elders. Digital algorithms feed youth a constant stream of content promoting selfish lifestyles, materialism, and rebellion against traditional values.

This distraction has made many young people emotionally distant from their families. They listen more to online personalities than to their own parents.

Weakening of Spiritual Awareness

At the core of the problem is a decline in spiritual consciousness. When faith weakens, values rooted in divine teachings become secondary. The command of Allah—“Do not even say ‘uff’ to your parents”—loses its importance when the connection with the Qur’an and the Sunnah weakens.

Respecting parents in Islam is not just etiquette; it is an act of worship.

Misunderstanding “Rights” and “Boundaries”

Today’s youth are quick to talk about their rights, often forgetting the rights of others—especially the rights of parents. Emotional reactions, ego, and a sense of entitlement cause adolescents to believe they are always right. This creates an environment where parental advice is unwelcome and easily dismissed.

Influence of Peer Pressure

Young people often compare their family life to that of their friends. When peers mock parental discipline or glorify freedom from household rules, youth start to believe that obeying parents is outdated or unnecessary.

The Divine Warning

Islam emphasizes the importance of parents. The Qur’an, after calling for belief in Allah, immediately highlights kindness and obedience to parents. The slightest sign of irritation—even a sigh of annoyance—is forbidden.

Why such strict instructions?

Because parents make immense sacrifices, love deeply, and endure hardship to raise their children. Their status is unmatched, and their rights are irreplaceable.

What Needs to Be Done?

To close this widening gap, three steps are vital:

1. Reconnect Youth with Spiritual Teachings
Mosques, schools, and media should actively promote Qur’anic teachings and prophetic guidance on respecting parents.

2. Promote Meaningful Family Interaction
Families need to revive the habit of sitting together, talking openly, and listening without judgment.

3. Teach Youth Emotional Discipline
Respect isn’t based on agreement. Children must learn that even when disagreements happen, manners and humility are essential.

Conclusion

Disobedience to parents isn’t a small issue—it’s a social, moral, and spiritual crisis. When youth dismiss this command, they weaken their character and risk earning Allah Almighty’s displeasure.
It’s time to remind the younger generation:
Respecting parents isn’t just culture—it’s a divine duty. And anyone who earns their parents’ prayers earns blessings in this world and the next.
