ISLAMABAD – The Government of Pakistan has officially approved the promotion of Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir (Nishan-e-Imtiaz Military) to the prestigious rank of Field Marshal, recognizing his exemplary leadership and strategic command during the recent military campaign “Operation Banyan Mersous.”
The decision was made during a high-level federal cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. According to cabinet members, the move honors General Munir’s exceptional military leadership and decisive role in defeating Indian aggression during the events of May 6–7, 2025.
Background: Clash with India
The development follows a major conflict with India, triggered after New Delhi launched a series of unprovoked airstrikes on Pakistani territory, allegedly in response to a tourist attack in Pahalgam, Occupied Kashmir. In retaliation, Pakistan initiated Operation Banyan Mersous, a comprehensive military campaign that, according to officials, “thwarted the enemy’s objectives” and “defended the nation’s sovereignty with honor.”
Prime Minister Sharif congratulated the nation on the success of the operation, calling it a historic moment and an example of unity, valor, and strategic brilliance. The cabinet noted that under General Munir’s command, the Pakistan Armed Forces not only repelled the attack but “restored regional balance.”
Second Field Marshal in Pakistan’s History
General Asim Munir now becomes only the second military leader in Pakistan’s history to be elevated to Field Marshal – the first being General Ayub Khan. The five-star rank is a symbolic and strategic honor, exceeding the four-star general level that typically leads the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Tribute from the Prime Minister and President
PM Shehbaz Sharif briefed President Asif Ali Zardari on the decision, who reportedly extended his full support. The Prime Minister praised General Munir’s “unshakable resolve and battlefield acumen,” while the cabinet unanimously supported the promotion.
In his statement, Field Marshal Munir said:
“I am deeply thankful to Allah for this honor. I dedicate this rank to the people of Pakistan, the armed forces, and all martyrs and veterans who made supreme sacrifices. This is not an individual honor, but one for the entire nation.”
